I don't think that for me there is a short cut. Only after a lot of shamatha practice-- simple sitting meditation, being aware of the breath,--for hours, days, does my mind become calm and clear enough to be aware of this energy in a visceral way and aware enough to shift it. For other people who are swifter, more fortunate, more accomplished, it may take a matter of seconds.
However, when I have been meditating a lot --when I am in a generally more aware and mindful state--this is easier.
Also, even without meditation, often I find myself thinking "I can choose my response." ie: a hassle over the phone with a utility bill...I can take a deep breath, pause, and choose not to get bent out of shape, can choose to be calm, pleasant (most of the time!)

I am interested on the " what and how to do it ".Most articles usually tell you broad
stories, experiences, descriptions of situations, circumstances, anecdotes, etc.
but they don't lay out the steps to effectively shift from a negative mental-emotional state to a calm, positive out look of circumstances, incident .plesae, elaborate on this. Thanks

Hello Maria,

I met you briefly yesterday evening at the JCL. I look forward to reading Incognito. As a poet, I am interested in psychological premise so loved the opening of your book. I've long been interested in Spain 1492 and was intrigued by the fact you chose to approach the subject from the perspective of "hiding."

You might also be interested in checking out the online literary journal qarrtsiluni (that is the speliing) I am very admiring of their journal, the work of two editors Beth and Dave. There are also poems of mine. You might like to have a look at "Go My Uncle and Fetch the Bride." It relates to last night's discussion. The question of artfulness vs. combat. To me a quiet statement can be a powerful one! A bridge not everyone accepts.

All best,
Jane
