Only after a lot of shamatha practice-- simple sitting meditation, being aware of the breath,--for hours, days, does my mind become calm and clear enough to be aware of this energy in a visceral way and aware enough to shift it. For other people who are swifter, more fortunate, more accomplished, it may take a matter of seconds. However, when I have been meditating a lot --when I am in a generally more aware and mindful state--this is easier. Also, even without meditation, often I find myself thinking "I can choose my response." ie: a hassle over the phone with a utility bill...I can take a deep breath, pause, and choose not to get bent out of shape, can choose to be calm, pleasant (most of the time!) I don’t think that for me there is a short cut.
